Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve near from Mumbai and one of India’s best for tiger sightings

Tiger Safari Near Mumbai

Tiger Safari Near Mumbai

Most people in Mumbai assume a tiger safari means a five-day trip to Rajasthan or a flight to Madhya Pradesh. It does not. There is a tiger reserve roughly 700 kilometres away with one of the highest tiger sighting rates in India. You can take an overnight train, be inside the forest by morning, and be back in Mumbai before the week is out.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra — June 2025

The reserve is Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur, Maharashtra. It is the closest major tiger reserve to Mumbai and one of the best in the country. I visited in June 2025 and it remains the most accessible forest I have been to from a city of this size anywhere in India.

How Far Is Tadoba from Mumbai

Tadoba is about 700 to 750 kilometres from Mumbai depending on which gate you are heading to. By road it takes 12 to 14 hours. By train it is much more practical — the overnight Vidarbha Express from Mumbai CST reaches Chandrapur in the morning. From Chandrapur the Moharli gate is about 45 kilometres, roughly an hour by taxi.

The faster option is to fly. Nagpur airport is about 150 kilometres from Tadoba — a two and a half hour drive on decent roads. Nagpur has direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore. If you are tight on time, the Nagpur flight is the cleanest way in and out.

From Pune the distance is roughly 800 kilometres. The journey options are the same — overnight train to Chandrapur or a flight to Nagpur.

📍 Getting to Tadoba

Why Tadoba Works So Well for a Mumbai Trip

There are a few reasons Tadoba works better than other reserves for a quick weekend trip from Mumbai.

It is in Maharashtra. No flight across states, no navigating an unfamiliar region. The roads from Nagpur are well maintained, the resort options near the gates are developed and there is no shortage of places to stay across different budgets.

The sighting rates are genuinely excellent. Tadoba has been growing its tiger population steadily and the tigers here are famously comfortable around safari vehicles. They go about their day without reacting to jeeps. I visited in June 2025 and a tiger sat down within six metres of our vehicle without even glancing at us. That kind of proximity is rare at most reserves.

Two nights is enough. Three or four safaris, a real sense of the forest, and you are back in Mumbai before the week is out. A Thursday night train, Friday and Saturday in the reserve, Sunday return puts you at your desk on Monday with photographs worth the trip.

Which Gate to Use at Tadoba

Tadoba has six core gates and several buffer gates spread across four zones. For a Mumbai visitor the right gate depends on how you are arriving.

If you are coming via Nagpur, the Navegaon gate is the closest core gate at about 106 kilometres from the city. It is a straightforward drive and a solid entry point for a first visit.

If you are coming via Chandrapur, both Moharli and Kolara are accessible. Moharli is the oldest and most popular gate with the highest tiger sighting rate in the reserve. Kolara is the second most popular and gives you access to the Tadoba Lake area — one of the best spots in the park during the dry season.

My recommendation for a first visit is Moharli. The guides know the territory well and the forest inside is prime tiger ground. Book a resort within five kilometres of the gate. The difference between staying close and staying far is the difference between entering at first light and arriving 45 minutes after everyone else.

💡
The single most important thing about gatesStay within 5 km of your entry gate. The first vehicles inside after opening always have the best sightings. A resort 40 km away means you are always arriving after the forest has already been disturbed by earlier jeeps.

Safari Timings at Tadoba

Two sessions run every day — morning and evening. Timings shift slightly between summer and winter to match sunrise and sunset.

Always do the morning safari if you can only pick one. Tigers are most active in the first ninety minutes after the gate opens. The light is better for photography and the forest is at its quietest before the day heats up.

Best Time to Visit Tadoba from Mumbai

March to June gives the best tiger sightings. The heat drives animals to waterholes and you can predict where they will be each morning. April and May in particular are exceptional if you can handle temperatures above 40 degrees.

October to February is the most comfortable. The mornings are cool, the forest is greener after the monsoon and sightings are still very good. This is also the easiest time to get permits because summer is not yet in full swing.

Is It Worth the Trip

Yes. A tiger safari from Mumbai is not the production most people imagine. The logistics are manageable, the reserve is excellent and Tadoba specifically gives you a quality of wildlife experience that is hard to find this close to a major city.

I have done three tiger reserves in the past two years — Panna, Bandhavgarh and Tadoba. If I had to send a Mumbai friend to one for their first safari, Tadoba is the answer every time. Close enough to actually go. Good enough to come back.
