Getting to Bandhavgarh
This is the part that catches people out. Bandhavgarh is not near anything convenient, and the journey needs planning more than the safari does.
- By air: Jabalpur is the usual choice, about four hours by road. Khajuraho is roughly five to six hours. Nagpur is longer but better connected.
- By train: Umaria is the nearest station, around 35 km, and Katni is a bigger railhead about two and a half hours out.
- By road: most lodges will arrange a car from Jabalpur or Umaria. Doing it yourself saves little.
- Base village: Tala, which sits at the main gate and has most of the accommodation.

Tala has everything from very basic guesthouses to expensive lodges, and the price range is wider than at most reserves. What actually matters is distance to the gate and whether the lodge has its own jeeps and guides.

- Lodges with in-house naturalists are worth the premium if you care about the wildlife rather than a checklist.

- Confirm jeep and permit arrangements in writing before you pay. This is where most complaints come from.

- Warm layers, more than you think, for December to February mornings.
- Neutral colours. Bright clothing is discouraged.

Budget for three components that people often only count two of: the permit, the jeep with guide, and the lodge. Core zone permits cost more than buffer, a full jeep costs more than a shared seat, and a naturalist from your lodge is usually extra again.
A realistic minimum for a worthwhile trip is two nights, four drives, which puts most of the cost in transport and permits rather than accommodation.
