Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is one of the best places in India to see a wild tiger. It is Maharashtra’s oldest and largest national park. The forests here are raw, the tigers are bold, and the sightings are some of the most dramatic you will find anywhere in the country. About the Reserve
What Makes Tadoba Special?
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, or TATR as wildlife people commonly call it, sits in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, about 150 km from Nagpur. It covers a total area of 1,727 square kilometres and is home to a steadily growing population of Royal Bengal Tigers.
The reserve gets its name from two things — “Tadoba” from the tribal god Taru, who is still worshipped by local communities, and “Andhari” from the river that flows through the forest. The park was established in 1955, making it Maharashtra’s oldest. The Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary, created in 1986, was merged with Tadoba in 1995 to form the combined reserve we have today.
What makes Tadoba stand out is its character. The dry deciduous forest, bamboo groves, and teak woodland give it a completely different look and feel compared to the denser forests of Bandhavgarh or Kanha. The famous Tadoba Lake and Kolsa Lake sit inside the reserve, and these water bodies attract tigers, sloth bears, and mugger crocodiles — sometimes all in the same spot, at the same time.

The tigers at Tadoba are known for being relatively habituated to safari vehicles. This means they often go about their day — walking, resting, hunting — without reacting to the jeep watching them. For wildlife photographers, this creates some incredibly natural, unposed moments.
When to Go
Best Time to Visit Tadoba
The reserve is open from October 1 to June 30 every year. The core zones close for the monsoon from July 1 to September 30, though some buffer zones stay open year-round for those who enjoy the jungle in the rains.

Photographer’s Sweet Spot: April–May
During peak summer, tigers come to the same waterholes every morning. If you know which waterhole is active, you can position your jeep and wait. This kind of predictable behaviour is what gives Tadoba its reputation among wildlife photographers. The light is good in the early morning hours and tigers are active before the heat builds up.

Each safari at Tadoba lasts approximately 4 hours. There are two safari slots every day — one in the morning and one in the evening. Timings shift between winter and summer to match sunrise, sunset, and animal activity patterns.

Tadoba’s Three Zones & All the Entry Gates
Tadoba is divided into three main tourism zones — Tadoba in the north, Moharli in the southwest, and Kolsa in the south. With over 22 entry gates spread across the reserve, choosing the right gate is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning your safari.
A simple rule: always stay as close to your entry gate as possible. A long drive to the gate eats into your precious morning time. Pick your resort first, and let the nearest gate drive your zone choice.
Zone 1 — North
Tadoba Zone
The northern zone is where the famous Tadoba Lake sits. It is one of the most beautiful parts of the reserve — open water surrounded by teak forest. Tigers are spotted here regularly, especially near the lake in the dry season. The ancient Tadoba village (now relocated) gives this area a cultural history too.
Moharli is the oldest and most popular zone in Tadoba. It allows the highest number of vehicles and is closest to most mid-range and luxury resorts. Tiger sightings are excellent here. The Moharli forest area is denser, with beautiful mixed forest and several waterholes that become tiger hotspots from March onwards.
The southern Kolsa zone is the least visited and most peaceful part of Tadoba. It has the Kolsa Lake, beautiful grasslands, and a more offbeat safari feel. If you want a quieter experience away from the bigger crowds at Moharli, Kolsa is an excellent choice. Sightings of leopard, wild dogs, and sloth bear are particularly good here.
Important about vehicle limits
Each gate allows a fixed number of jeeps per session. Moharli being the largest core gate allows the most vehicles — about 4 times more than a small gate like Khutwanda. This means Moharli is easier to get slots for, but can also feel busier inside the forest. Smaller gates give a quieter experience, but slots are harder to get.

The Tadoba Lake and Kolsa Lake are the best spots for concentrated wildlife. During the dry season (April–May), water becomes scarce and these lakes become the only reliable water sources for miles around. This draws tigers, gaur, sambar, and deer — sometimes 20–30 animals drinking at the same time while a tiger watches from the shadows. It is the kind of scene most visitors remember for a lifetime.
Birdwatchers will find over 280 recorded species including the crested serpent eagle, Indian roller, Malabar pied hornbill, brown fish owl, and painted stork.

Nagpur Airport is the nearest airport, about 150 km from Moharli Gate. It has direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and other major cities. From the airport, take a taxi to the reserve — the drive takes about 2.5–3 hours.

Chandrapur Railway Station is the closest at about 45 km from Moharli. Wardha and Nagpur are also good options with broader train connectivity. From Chandrapur, hire a taxi or auto to your gate — takes about 1 hour.

Tadoba is well connected by highways. From Mumbai: ~800 km (14–15 hrs). From Nagpur: ~150 km (3 hrs). From Hyderabad: ~440 km (7–8 hrs). Many visitors drive from Nagpur or Chandrapur — roads are in good condition.

Mumbai Visitors — Weekend Road Trip Option
Tadoba is about 800 km from Mumbai — that is a long drive in a day. The smart option is to take an overnight train from Mumbai (CST or LTT) to Chandrapur, arriving in the morning, and hire a taxi to the gate. You can be on your first safari the same afternoon. For the return, fly Nagpur to Mumbai — quick and easy.

Tadoba safari bookings are entirely online and managed by the Maharashtra Forest Department. Walk-in slots at the gate are very limited and cannot be relied upon during peak season. Here is how to book:

The Maharashtra Forest Department runs the only official online booking system for Tadoba safaris. Avoid third-party sites that charge extra fees. Search for the official Tadoba safari booking portal to find the current link.

Create an account and choose your zone
Register with your email. Then select your preferred zone (Tadoba, Moharli, or Kolsa), entry gate, and safari date. Check availability — bookings open 120 days in advance and peak dates fill up fast.

Enter visitor details and IDs
Add all visitor names and ID details exactly as they appear on your government ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence). The ID proof will be checked at the gate. Foreign nationals must provide passport details.

Pay the fees and get confirmation
Pay online. Camera fees of ₹250 are also paid at this step. You will receive a booking confirmation. Download the permit and carry a printed or digital copy to the gate. Permits are non-transferable and non-refundable once confirmed.

10 Tips for a Better Tadoba Safari

Morning safari always beats evening
Tiger activity is highest in the first hour after the gate opens. The light is better for photography and the forest is cooler and more alive. If you can only do one safari, make it the morning one.

Stay at least 2 nights
You need at least 3–4 safari sessions to get the full Tadoba experience. One or two nights gives you that. Many visitors who come for one night leave wishing they had stayed longer.

Book a resort inside the buffer zone boundary
Resorts right on the edge of the park are walking or a two-minute drive from their gate. This is very different from staying in Chandrapur town and driving 40 km each way. It saves time and cuts stress.

Listen to alarm calls
Spotted deer and langurs sound alarm calls when they sense a tiger nearby. Your guide will know what to listen for. When you hear one, stay patient and quiet — the tiger often appears within minutes.

Do not stand up or hang out of the vehicle
Keep all body parts inside the jeep at all times. Tigers have been known to approach very close to vehicles. Standing up also disturbs other vehicles and scares animals.

Wear neutral colours only
Avoid bright whites, reds, and neon colours. These are visible to animals from far away and can cause them to change direction away from you. Olive, beige, brown, and dark green are the right choices.

In summer, target the waterholes
Between March and June, ask your guide to take you to the known waterholes in your zone. Tigers drink every day in the heat. A patient wait near a waterhole is often more rewarding than driving around the whole forest.

Take the buffer zone seriously
Many visitors only book core zone and ignore the buffer. Buffer zones at Tadoba can produce excellent sightings, especially of leopards, sloth bears, and wild dogs. They are also less crowded and have a different forest character.

Keep your phone on silent
A ringing phone at the wrong moment is one of the most common ways to lose a sighting. Switch your phone to silent as soon as you enter the gate — and keep it that way.

Look at everything, not just tigers
