Tadoba is the park I send first-time tiger watchers to. It is easy to reach, the tigers are relaxed, and the forest has a wild, dry beauty that I never get tired of. But when you go makes a big difference. A trip in May feels like a different park from a trip in December.
So here is a plain, month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Tadoba. It comes from our own trips and from the dates the park publishes. Dates can change, so always check the official ones before you book.

The short answer
If you want tigers, go between March and June. If you want cool weather and birds, go between October and February. If you go in July, August or September, the main zones are closed.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | October to February | Cool and comfortable. Good for families and birdwatchers. Lots of migratory birds arrive. Tigers are seen, but animals are not as crowded around water. |
| Summer | March to June | Hot, but the best time for tigers. Animals gather at the lake and waterholes. It can get above 45°C, so carry water and a hat. |
| Monsoon | July to September | Core zones closed. Some buffer zones stay open. The forest is green and there are few visitors, but sightings are harder. |
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is open from 1 October to 30 June. The core zones close from 1 July to 30 September. A few buffer zones, such as Agarzari, Devada and Junona, stay open through the rains.
March to June: the tiger months
This is what Tadoba is famous for. As summer builds, the forest dries up and water gets scarce. The animals have nowhere to go except the lake and a few waterholes. And so the tigers come to drink, to rest, and to cool off. They come to the same places almost every morning.

In April and May, a tiger at a waterhole can stay for 30 to 40 minutes. For a photographer, that is a gift. You can set up, breathe, and take your time. If you know which waterhole is active, you can park the jeep and wait.
The price you pay is the heat. It can be well above 45°C in the afternoon. Mornings are fine. Use the break between safaris to rest in a cool room. And drink more water than you think you need.

October to February: cool, green and full of birds
After the rains, the forest is fresh and green. The mornings are cool. Sitting in an open jeep is much more pleasant. This is also when migratory birds arrive.

Tadoba has more than 280 bird species. The lesser adjutant stork and the Asian openbill are regular sights. I wrote about them in Birds of Tadoba.
You can still see tigers in these months. They are just harder to plan for, because water is everywhere and the animals are not forced into a few spots. The good side is that permits are easier to get, and the park is quieter.
July to September: the monsoon break
The core zones are closed. A few buffer zones stay open. If you love the forest in the rains, you can go, but expect mud and very few sightings. Most visitors skip this time of year.
