The first time I went on a jungle safari, I packed like I was going on a holiday. I took a white shirt, a thin jacket and too many things. By the end of the first morning, I knew I had it wrong. A safari is not a normal trip. It starts in the dark, it can be freezing or boiling, and the road is full of dust.
This is a simple packing list, based on our safaris in Tadoba, Bandhavgarh, Panna and Jawai. Nothing fancy. Just what really helps.

What to wear
- Dull colours. Brown, green, khaki or olive. They blend in with the forest. Skip white, red and bright colours.
- A light jacket for the early drive. Even in a warm region, a 4 AM jeep ride has a cold wind.
- Layers. A cold morning can turn into a hot afternoon. Take layers you can take off.
- A hat. It protects you from the sun when the jeep is open.
- Comfortable shoes. You will mostly sit, but you may walk at the gate or the lodge.
- A scarf or buff. It keeps the dust off your face.
What to carry in your bag
- Water. Carry a bottle. In summer, Tadoba can go above 45°C.
- Binoculars. Half the fun is spotting before the camera even comes up.
- A camera with a long lens. At Jawai, the leopards sit far on the hills, so reach matters more than anything.
- A bean bag. It rests on the jeep rail and keeps the camera steady.
- A padded bag and a lens cloth. Rajasthan dust is real, and so is dust in every dry park.
- Spare batteries and cards. Cold mornings drain batteries.
- Your permit and ID. You need them at the gate.
- Sunscreen.

Packing for each season
| Season | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| Summer (March to June) | Light cotton clothes, a hat, lots of water, sunscreen and rest in the afternoon. It can be very hot. |
| Winter (October to February) | A warm jacket, gloves and a scarf for the early drive. Mornings can be cold, even in central India. |
| Monsoon | Most core zones are closed, but if you go to a buffer zone, take a rain jacket and a waterproof bag for the camera. |
