Tadoba, Bandhavgarh and Panna — Which Tiger Reserve Should You Visit

Tadoba, Bandhavgarh and Panna — Which Tiger Reserve Should You Visit First

Tadoba, Bandhavgarh and Panna —
Which Tiger Reserve Should You Visit First?

Visited all three in two years. Panna in April 2024, Bandhavgarh in April 2025, Tadoba in June 2025. Saw tigers at all three. This is not a ranking. It is an honest account of what each reserve is actually like, who each one is right for, and what you need to know before you go.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra — June 2025

People ask me this question a lot. Tadoba or Bandhavgarh? Is Panna worth it? Which one has the most tigers? The honest answer is that they are three very different experiences and the right one depends entirely on what you are looking for. Let me go through each one.

01 — Maharashtra

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve

Tadoba was my most recent visit and the one I keep recommending to people asking for their first tiger safari. It is Maharashtra’s oldest national park, established in 1955, and covers over 1,700 square kilometres of dry teak forest, bamboo groves and open grassland. The Tadoba Lake sits at the heart of the reserve and becomes the most important spot in the park between March and June when everything comes to drink there.

What makes Tadoba different from any other reserve I have visited is the temperament of the tigers. They are completely relaxed around safari vehicles. They walk past jeeps, sit nearby, drink from waterholes ten metres away. During my June 2025 visit a tiger sat down within six metres of our vehicle without glancing at us once. For wildlife photography this kind of natural, unhurried access is extraordinary.

Gates and Timings

Tadoba has six core gates. The two most important are Moharli and Kolara. Moharli is the oldest and most popular with the highest sighting rate. Kolara sits near the Tadoba Lake and is famous for the tigress Maya and her cubs. For visitors coming from Nagpur, the Navegaon gate is the closest at 106 km.

Best Time to Visit

March to June is the best time for tiger sightings. Animals concentrate near the Tadoba Lake and waterholes as the summer builds. The waterhole encounters in April and May can last 30 to 40 minutes as tigers come to drink, rest and move on. October to February is better for comfortable weather and easier permit availability.

🍎
Tadoba is best forFirst-time safari visitors, wildlife photographers, anyone coming from Mumbai or Pune. Two nights gives you enough time. Book Moharli or Kolara first and stay within 5 km of your gate.

02 — Madhya Pradesh

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

If Tadoba impressed me with its photography, Bandhavgarh overwhelmed me with its tigers. We had successful sightings on three out of four safaris. One encounter lasted over 40 minutes as a tigress walked parallel to our jeep through the forest. Bandhavgarh has the highest tiger density of any reserve in India and you feel it from the moment you enter.

The core area covers about 105 square kilometres and supports more than 50 tigers. There are pugmarks on every track, fresh scrapes on the trees, territorial markings everywhere. The forest tells you there are tigers here before you see one.

The name comes from mythology — Rama built a fort here for his brother Lakshman. The fort actually exists. It sits 800 metres above the forest on a rocky cliff and is visible from the Tala zone safari trails. It is one of those details that makes Bandhavgarh feel unlike anywhere else.

Gates and Timings

Bandhavgarh has three core zones. Tala is the most famous and is the premium zone — highest density, best sighting history, and the fort is visible from inside. Book Tala if permits are available. If not, go straight to Magadhi — sighting rates are nearly as good and the waterholes are excellent. Khitauli is the third zone, quieter and better for birds and elephants.

🕐 Bandhavgarh Safari Timings
Morning safari (summer)~5:30 AM — 30 min before sunrise
Morning safari (winter)~6:30 AM — 30 min before sunrise
Evening safari30 min before sunset
Duration per session~3 hours
ClosedWednesday afternoons

Best Time to Visit

October to May is good throughout. March to May is peak season for tiger sightings as the dry heat concentrates animals near water. November to February is the most comfortable and ideal for first-time visitors. Book at least three to four months ahead for the Tala zone during peak months — permits go very fast.

🍎
Bandhavgarh is best forAnyone who wants the best odds of seeing a tiger. If a sighting is the priority above everything else, this is your reserve. Also exceptional for those who want a historically rich experience — the fort inside the forest is genuinely remarkable.

03 — Madhya Pradesh

Panna Tiger Reserve

Panna is the reserve I recommend most to people who want something different. It is quieter than Bandhavgarh, less visited than Tadoba and it has two things no other reserve on this list can offer — a night safari and a boat safari on the Ken River.

It also has a story behind it that makes a sighting feel more meaningful. Around 2009 the tiger population had almost completely collapsed due to poaching. What followed was India’s first successful large-scale tiger relocation programme. Animals were brought in from Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench. The population has been recovering steadily since then. When you see a tiger at Panna, you are seeing the result of that work.

The Ken River runs through the full length of the core zone. The rocky banks are where everything happens — gharials on the gravel islands, mugger crocodiles in the shallows, tigers coming to drink at dawn. The boat safari on the river gives you a completely different angle on the forest. You move quietly on water through territory that a jeep cannot reach.

Gates and Timings

Panna has two core gates. Madla is the main one — most resorts are here, most safari routes start here and the Ken River boat safari departs from this zone. Hinauta is the second core gate, about 30 km from Madla.

The most unique gate is Harsa — a buffer zone gate that runs the only night safari in all of Madhya Pradesh. It operates from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. You cannot book online. You go to the Harsa gate counter before 4:00 PM on the day you want to go and buy the permit in person. The cost is roughly ₹3,700 for six people. Hyenas, jungle cats, owls, porcupines — things you will never see on a daytime drive.

Best Time to Visit

October to March is most popular — comfortable weather, good sightings, Pandava Falls in flow. March to June gives the best tiger sightings near the Ken River. One more thing worth knowing — Panna is 25 km from Khajuraho airport and the Khajuraho temples. Many visitors combine a two-night safari with a visit to the 10th-century stone temples. Morning safari, temples in the afternoon, back for the night safari at Harsa. It is one of the best combinations in Indian travel.

Panna is best forTravellers who want a unique experience beyond a standard jeep safari. The night safari at Harsa, the Ken River boat safari, the quieter forest and the recovery story behind the tigers make Panna genuinely special. Also perfect combined with Khajuraho.

So Which One Should You Visit First

If this is your first tiger safari and you want to feel confident you will see a tiger — go to Bandhavgarh. The sighting rates are the highest in India and the forest is genuinely beautiful. Book the Tala zone well in advance.

If you are coming from Mumbai or Pune and want the most practical trip with excellent results — go to Tadoba. It is closer, easier to plan and the tiger encounters are some of the most natural you will find anywhere.

If you have done one or two safaris already and want something that feels different — go to Panna. The night safari, the river, the quieter forest and the comeback story behind the tigers make it the most memorable of the three in a different way.

All three are worth visiting. If you do them in order — Tadoba first, Bandhavgarh second, Panna third — you will have seen three completely different sides of what an Indian tiger reserve can be.

📷
One tip that applies to all threeAlways do the morning safari over the evening one if you can only choose one. The first 90 minutes after the gate opens is when tigers are most active. Stay as close to your gate as possible. Listen to your guide when they go quiet. Wear brown, green or khaki inside the forest. Carry your original ID — not a photocopy.
